If you have had a baby, you know the drama that is post-partum hair loss. I got lucky, and was spared a few months in the beginning, mostly due to breastfeeding, I think. But as soon as that six month mark hit, my hair started falling out in clumps. No joke, I thought I was going to go bald! My hair was thin enough, before. What was going to happen now that I was shedding worse than a dog?! Then, I noticed that my mascara was doing nothing for me anymore. I tried a new one. Same thing. I splurged and got a lash primer. Still, stubby little lashes. That is when it hit me. My lashes were suffering, too! Saddest time ever.

Three years later, and I still don’t think they have fully recovered. They just aren’t as long and thick as they used to be. C’est la vie, right? I had a wedding to go to last year, and decided to go full glam and grab a pair of falsies. I had only ever worn them before for Halloween, and never really thought that they were for me. But holy shit, guys. Lashes!! They are AH-MAZING! I felt like a total queen all night. After doing a little research, I learned that there are way more options out there then there used to be, and there are some awesome, natural-ish options.
I now wear lashes at least once a week, if not more. I don’t really get fully made up during the week, but if I am going out to dinner with the hubs, or have anything more to do then the standard grocery shop, lashes are getting put on. And they definitely get busted out on Saturdays They make such a difference! I can even go for a little more of a dramatic lash now that I am used to them.
I am going to share with you all the tips that I wish I had known when I first started wearing lashes. It takes a few tries to get confident, but you will be rocking that cat eye in no time with these tricks!
Choose the right lash! I can’t stress this enough. Go to your local beauty store, or even head online and check out pictures of actual people wearing the different options. There are full on barbie lashes out there, soft romantic lashes, stage lashes, etc. If you just want to be able to meet up with your girlfriends for lunch or stun the moms in the PTA meeting, go for something a little less full, and not too long, like my favorite Ardell Lashes. If you are looking to get your groove on for V-Day coming up, grab these.
Get the right glue! If you are confident in a big, bold wing, go for a black lash glue. It won’t look noticeable when dried, and will blend in with your liner. But if you want to keep things subtle, this is THE BEST lash glue out there. It dries matte and clear, so if you smudge it around it isn’t going to make a difference! Total win for a newbie.
Trim your lashes! I cannot stress enough how much of a difference this will make in how natural your lashes look. My lashes naturally get really short and sparse on the inner quarter of my lash line. So, I almost always trim my last strip down but a chunk or two. You will notice that most lash strips have little tiny gatherings toward the strip. I just count one or two in and cut with small scissors. It might take you a try or two to get there right size, but just cut one at a time and line it up on your lash line before going in with any glue.
Throw on a quick coat of mascara. Nothing crazy, just enough to darken up your natural lashes and make them blend in when you apply your faux lashes.
Grab a lash tool. I know, you can just use tweezers. But I will be the first to admit, I have poked myself in the eyeball with a pair of Tweezermans before. And the eyewaterinw that ensued after was not worth it! I have one that is plastic, easy to clean and isn’t going to do any damage to your eyes if you are a klutz like myself. They are usually curved like an eyelash curler, so you can place the falsies right up against your natural lashes.
Let that glue DRY! It is really easy to be afraid that the lashes won’t stick to your eyes. I PROMISE you they will. You need to let the glue get nice and tacky before even attempting to place it on your eyelid. If it is fresh, it will just slide around and get glue all over your eye. Not cute. I count to at least 30, but 45 if I am using black glue. That way, when you place your lash on, it isn’t going to move an inch.
Now, go for it! Be confident when you are applying. I like to start by placing the center first. Then you can pull the ends towards the corners of your eyes for a nice, straight line. Use the back end of your tool or tweezers to push the strip down into your natural lashes. Be patient. You might need to pull them up once or twice as you are learning, but the glue will stay tacky for a minute or two. Take your time in getting it right, because these bad boys are going to be on your face for a while. Making sure they feel comfortable is just as important as them looking fabulous.
Last but not least… Rock those Bambi eyes, girl! I swore that everyone was looking at me the first few times I went out in daylight with falsies on. But honestly? Most people don’t notice! And if they do, no one is getting all up in your face to make sure they are exactly perfect. The same rule I use to eyeliner applies here. Unless you are having a nose to nose staring competition, no one will be able to tell if your liner, or in this case, lashes are just a little off center or uneven. All they are going to see are gorgeous eyes and your big bright smile as your work your flutter.
Get it, girl!
