I need to be ready to go for the day when it is time for the school run. If I roll up to school with yoga pants and a pineapple bun, I am going to end up wasting precious time later in the day. Half the time, I won’t get showered until after lunch! And where has the day gone? Not sure about you, but I am a lot more productive when I put a little effort into my appearance. Getting ready needs to happen fast, though. I don’t have time for anything more than five minute makeup before it is time to head out the door.

I have a solid routine in the morning that gets me out the door with minimal effort. I’m talking less than five minutes from moisturizer to lipstick. It really takes very little effort to pull yourself together quickly. I wanted to share with you guys things that I have learned in my first year of being a “carpool mom.” You don’t have to sacrifice time, sleep or feeling good about yourself! This applies to anyone is has a hard time making it out the door on time. Here are my tricks to getting out the door at lightning speed.
Clothes
Something that totally changed my life was putting together a wardrobe. It doesn’t have to be capsule, but starting to bring things into your closet that are cohesive makes getting dressed in the morning so much faster. All of my clothes go together, in some way or another. Layering is easy, because most of my clothing is the same tone – no problems matching! I have some solid basics (T-shirts, perfect fitting jeans, sweaters) in my drawers that I can just pull out, add a cardigan or jacket and voila! I have an actual outfit. If you like having a really wide variety, try planning your outfit out the night before. Knowing what you will wear will cut down on a good chunk of time throwing things on. I’ve been trying out a clothing rental service called Gwynnie Bee, and am really enjoying it so far! I will report back when I have a full 30 days under my belt.
Coffee
Who doesn’t love iced coffee? I would rather drink iced coffee nine times out of ten. I make a big carafe of cold brew once or twice a week, so I can grab my coffee fast. In the morning, there is no waiting for the coffee pot, puttering around with the pour over or crying over being out of Nespresso capsules (I haven’t done this… Promise…) Just dump a little ice, sugar, milk and the cold brew into a travel cup and you’ve got the perfect school run pick me up.
Makeup
For me, this is hands down the biggest thing I can do in the morning to set the tone for the day. No makeup? Nothing gets done when I get back from doing the school run. But if I quickly throw a little concealer on, I am subconsciously telling myself that the day has started, and I am ready to take on the world! Here is all you need to “put your face on” faster than you can shower a three year old.
- Tinted moisturizer or BB cream – I love using something that I can slap on with my fingers. You’re only down one minute at this point!
- Concealer – Bust out the big guns with this and brighten up your under eyes. Blending with a beauty sponge makes even super full coverage concealers look seamless.
- Setting powder – Swirl this all over super quick. Two minutes in!!
- Bronzer – Draw in some cheekbones and bring a little life to your face with some bronzer. Use the classic B3 shape to go around your temple, under your cheekbones and along your jaw to add definition.
- Liquid Lip – I use a berry colored liquid lip as a lipstick and a cream blush. Just dap it on your cheeks and use your fingers to blend.
- Brows and Lashes – Use a pencil for really quick, defined browns and a lengthening mascara for the most bang for your time.
And you’re done! That is it. Super fast and easy, but it makes a huge difference! You really don’t have to spend a ton of time to look like you put in a ton of effort.

I would love to know how to build a clothing capsule. I LOVE the idea of quickly grabbing a few items without thought but knowing they go well together.
It is on my list of posts! Especially since I am working on my spring wardrobe now! 😀 Will definitely get it up ASAP. xxxx
