Asking if I want chips and salsa is like asking my toddler if he wants an Oreo. The answer is always, “Heck, YES!” The problem is, I always want restaurant salsa. The fresh, bright dip that is packed with cilantro and has just enough heat that you need to take a sip of your margarita to cool your mouth off. This is totally impossible to find anywhere other than a giant tub at Costco. My little family of three is not going to get through that before it goes bad. So, I decided to try a few at home recipes until I found the best homemade salsa out there.
One of the most awesome parts about making your own salsa, is that you get to choose the flavor. If you want it smoky, you can add in some chipotle. Want something super bright and refreshing? Zest some extra lime. If you are like me, throw in the whole jalapeño, seeds and all to set your mouth on fire. Or add a little mango and corn to sweeten things up! I’m sharing my base recipe today. It is perfect as is, but the perfect start to any kind of dip your family might enjoy.
Bottoms up! The bottom of the chip basket, that is…
Homemade Salsa Recipe
Makes one quart of salsa. Easily doubled and freezes amazingly!
You could also use a 28 oz can of tomatoes for this recipe. They are usually a bit more acidic than fresh, and you may need to add in a teaspoon or two of sugar. Just taste and adjust!
- 2 16 oz cherry tomatoes, or two pounds of roma tomatoes
- 1 4 oz can diced green chiles
- 1/2 red onion
- jalapeño – remove the seeds and veins to reduce heat.
- big old handful of cilantro
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- zest and juice of one lime
Dump everything into a blender or food processor. Pulse a few times until you reach the desired consistency. Pop in the fridge until you are ready to serve. Lasts about five days in the fridge, but easily freezes.
This is pretty much the easiest recipe you could ever make! But it is also one of those really impressive ones. “You made your own salsa??” People will be pretty impressed, and they will never know you didn’t chop a thing.

I’m addicted to good salsa. It goes on everything in our house!
This is one of those that hard to stop snacks for sure!
Sounds delicious and you just throw it into a blender? I’m in! Healthy and easy is my kind of recipe!
Same, girl!
Yummm. Now I want some fresh salsa. Love that you included lots of ways to change it up for different preferences. I have some cherry tomatoes that I need to use up today. I know what I’m making!
Hope it is fabulous! <3
I’m totally going to try this recipe! This looks just like the salsa I ate at a wonderful mexican cantina last night. Great post!

Yum I love fresh salsa ! I am pinning this for the summer when my tomatoes come in. It sounds super easy and quick perfec for a pool day.
Don’t think anything poolside can be bad!
I love salsa. I have not yet made my own but I for sure want to. This looks so good!
I can’t believe I had never done it before! Tasted just like a restaurant!
THis looks delicious! I can’t remember when I last made fresh salsa. Really, I should do it again soon 🙂
SO easy and fast. Can’t wait to make this with summer tomatoes!
This Salsa looks delicious! I love the addition of Cumin as it adds a great flavor layer.
That combined with the green chiles make it nice and Smokey without being spicy!
This is a quick and easy recipe for a dinner party or just a table snack! I’m not personally a huge fan of green chiles but I know people who would love this recipe!
The best part of this recipe is that you can add and subtract whatever you like! Swap out the green chilies for a dash of Chile pepper! Or just leave it out. 🙂 will still be delicious!
Yum! I love that you use “big old handful” as a measurement. That’s how I cook too.
Not many other ways to measure cilantro in my book 🙂
I love fresh salsa… I like that I get to control the heat!! Such a great recipie.
Exactly! Making it however you feel in the moment is the best part.
Haven’t before prepared fresh salsa by myself! Always thought it’s difficult, but you make it so easy ! 🙂
So easy! And worth throwing the blender in the dishwasher at the end!
FINALLY! A recipe I can put together simply by visiting my local market. I can promise you I will be using this. It’s also vegan friendly which makes me happy. 🙂
It’s also an awesome way to use up some veggies or herbs that are on their way out.
This is such a delicious recipe ! I am literally licking my fingers here 😀😀😀😀. Thank you for the lovely post ❤️
Hope you try it and love it! Xxx
