In the hunt for some spring essentials, I was stuck on finding some interesting new brands, good quality staples and stylish pieces that were actually in my size. It really shouldn’t be that hard, but for whatever reason, finding clothing that fits into my capsule wardrobe is work. I heard about Trunk Club from a few of my blogger friends who couldn’t stop raving about it. I decided to try it out and share my Trunk Club review with you all here!
Sometimes going to the mall or downtown to my favorite stores can be fun. But other times, I just want to try things on in my own home, see if I have anything similar or if I can style an interesting top with some clothes that I already have in my wardrobe. I don’t like to have a bunch of dresses or shirts that I am only going to wear once in a while. I want classic pieces that are going to coordinate. (Those special occasions are the reason I love Gwynnie Bee! Rent a gorgeous dress or cute printed shirt for a few days and send it back.)
Ok. A quick rundown of how it works. With Trunk Club, there is a $25 styling fee that works as a credit to anything you keep in your box. (If you have a Nordstrom card, you get that styling fee waived!) You fill out an easy form about some general styling things and then you are assigned a stylist. If you sign up through me, you can request my stylist! (She is amazing, obvi.) Your stylist then asks you a few questions about what you are looking for, any specific items that you are missing in your closet, takes your budget into consideration, AND you can send them Pinterest boards and your Instagram account. That way, they can get a great feel of your own personal style.
There are a few reasons to try Trunk Club, and one of them is getting to try on all of the pieces your stylist picked out for you at home. Just like makeup looks different the minute you walk out of a Sephora, clothes look different when you check them out outside the dressing room. They become a bit more… real once they are in your home and your environment. That dramatic maxi dress that made you feel so tropical and fabulous? Kind of a bit too much for the office. Or the perfect denim skirt you found at Target? Way too short once you sit down to play with your kiddos. You don’t get charged until you decide to keep something. Brilliant!
One thing I had to add into my Trunk Club review is unlike so many other styling boxes out there, you can to approve or remove what your stylist pick. I absolutely love this part of Trunk Club. My stylist sent me the option to try out the cutest espadrilles, but they were way outside of my budget. So instead of feeling bummed out when I tried them on and loved them (I knew I would), I just requested that she not send them. Easy!
Let’s get into what I got in my trunk! I wanted a few specific items and then I let Jennifer have free reign to choose some things she thought I would like. I got to try a few things I normally wouldn’t have considered and it totally opened up my eyes!
Twisty Turn Long Sleeve Tee – Zella
I’m starting a new program at a studio here in the city, and I wanted some cute workout clothes! I know that is totally unnecessary to starting a new workout routine. But I’m a little nervous and want to feel good when I walk in the door to sweat my booty off. This Zella top is SO STINKING CUTE. The knot makes this looser fit top super flattering and the material feels extra breathable. I can totally see myself wearing this everywhere, not just the gym. (Linked here.)
Lux Ankle Leggings – Marika Curves
The leggings are from a new to me brand, Marika Curves. These were such a fun pair of leggings. The are 7/8 length and the fabric feels really lightweight. I already have a really similar pair that I forgot about when reviewing my trunk, so I will be sending these back. (Linked here.)
Tie Sleeve Utility Jacket – Calson
Next up is this super cute green utility jacket from Calson. I love so many of their things. The fit is always perfect and they make staple pieces a little more interesting by just adding in something fresh. The sleeves on this jacket are amazing. They are almost bell sleeve in shape, but the tie inches it in and pulls it all together. I think this makes the perfect elevated utility jacket that you can use to dress down a fancier outfit or feel pulled together when you are just in jeans and a tee. (Jacket linked here.)
Hooded Utility Jacket – Luck Brand
This was another utility jacket that my stylist picked out for me and omg. It is so adorable! It is a bit longer than a standard jacket and falls just below my bum, which makes it perfect for leggings or going to and from the gym. The pockets are deep and the hood adds a casual detail that I am obsessed with. The salmon color is great for the spring and a great lightweight, linen blend material. The jacket runs a big, so if I decide to keep this I will need to send it back for a size smaller. Another great thing about Trunk Club compared to other styling companies. If it doesn’t fit, you can exchange it! (Jacket linked here)
Ruffle Edge Top – Rachel Roy
Hello, summer date night outfit! I’m not sure even know where to start with all of the perfectness that is this top. I have been searching for a bright coral colored top. I find one every summer and wear them over and over. This is THE color for my skin tone when I have a tan. The off the shoulder part of the shirt is nice and loose, so it isn’t going to be fiddly all evening and the wide straps make it easy to wear a bra. Thank you, lord, say all busty women out there. If you are looking for a fun statement top for the spring and summer, this is it. You can dress it up with a pair of heels or down with a denim jacket and white jeans. (Top linked here.)
Altala Denim Jacket – Junarose
Couldn’t even count on one hand the number of denim jackets I have tried on in the last few months on the hunt for “the one.” The right wash to go with everything. Not too light, not too dark. Real denim, not the thin, stretchy stuff of late, but the solid, stiff jean from the 90’s. Hits right at the hip to make it easy for layering. Gold hardware and button cuffs. THIS IS IT, guys. My soul mate denim jacket which is one of those necessary closet pieces in every wardrobe. The quality of this is to die for and I know I am going to be rocking this year round for years to come. And it will only get better with time. Love at first wear, my friends. (Similar jacket linked here)
Sculpted Denim Jeggings in Black – NYDJ
I didn’t even think to look at the sizing on things when my stylist sent over my trunk preview, so when I pulled these out of my trunk and saw they were two sizes smaller than my normal jean size I was so disappointed. But like the glutton for punishment that I am, I still tried to put them on. And to my surprise, they slipped right up! I guess these run really big and have quite a bit of stretch to them, so definitely size down if you try these! I love a pair of skinnies that totally suck me in and make it so I don’t feel like I am jiggling too much when I am running to catch the train or playing at the park.
These just have a nice… “cuppage” in to bum area to give you that lift you want without also giving you a wedgie, if you know what I mean! They have an elasticated waist, which I was worried would make me feel like I am in granny clothes, but they are actually super comfortable and you would never be able to tell. Downside, no front pockets! Totally keeping these and am already trying to hunt them down in white. (Jeans linked here)
There were a few more pieces in the box that just didn’t work for me at all. But that is due to body shape, more than anything. I loved every item I was sent and it is going to be tough to choose which pieces I ultimately can keep while still making my wallet happy.
If you are interested in trying out Trunk Club, you can sign up via my link and stylist here. If you love it and refer someone to do their own Trunk Club Review/trial, if they decide to keep anything, you get a 50$ credit to your trunk. Don’t forget to mention if you have a Nordstrom card when chatting to your stylist to have your styling fee waived!
I will definitely be doing another box come the summer months! It was just so nice to have an outside eye looking for things that I may like. Getting stuck in a rut happens way too often, and it is nice to break out of that once in a while. I think I will always be more of a capsule wardrobe girl, but getting a few special pieces each season is a great way to freshen up your wardrobe and add the finishing touches for the season.
Would you try a styling box like Trunk Club?
Gorgeous, I have been looking for a denim jacket too but also don’t want it too washed out! I might go for one like this
