If you have any kind of curl to your hair, you have probably heard about The Curly Girl Method. There are approximately 1,000 rules and restrictions and makes doing your curly hair a giant science experiment that I always felt destined to fail. There is absolutely nothing wrong with TCG method if it works for you. It was just a little too much for me, and I always ended up quitting.
As the weather warms up, my curls come out more and more and I embrace the natural texture. I like the flexibility that doing my hair curly or straight gives to me, and I’ve found a routine that I really like for my hair texture. I have fine, thin hair with a tendency to be dry. It needs moisture but it isn’t heavy.

PRODUCTS THAT I USE
I like to use gel when doing my curls. Something with great hold doesn’t leave residue or white flakes and gives a really good cast. Adding in a leave-in treatment and a shine spray at the end gives me really great curls with minimal frizz. I often will steal my husband’s gel, because it works so well! But I love the convenience of the pump on the Kristin Ess Jelly.

STEP BY STEP
- SQUEEZE OUT EXCESS WATER – Just use your hands. Don’t touch your hair with a towel!
- COMB HAIR UPSIDE DOWN – I usually keep my products in the shower to make it a little easier. Using any brush, flip your head upside down and comb out any tangles and pull the roots away from your scalp.
- APPLY LEAVE-IN TREATMENT/CONDITIONER – Keeping your head upside down, focus this in the ends and underneath of my hair where you get the most frizz. Use “praying hands” to distribute without breaking up big clumps.
- GEL YOUR HAIR WHILE UPSIDE DOWN – Again, start by using praying hands to apply a generous amount of gel. Whatever you think is normal, double that and you are on the right track. I smooth the gel over my hair before I start scrunching it in.
- FIX YOUR PART- Flip your hair right side up now and gently fix any curls that are going the wrong way. Try not to disturb too many big clumps of curls or pull down on the hair.
- MORE GEL – Yep. Add some more to the top portion of your hair by scrunch upwards, never pulling down on the hair. You want to keep as much lift at the roots from combing upwards as possible.
- AIR DRY – For as long as possible, let your hair air dry. Even if it is 20-30 minutes while you get dressed and do your makeup. Air drying keeps the frizz to a minimum. When possible, I let my hair air dry completely, which can take about two hours.
- DIFFUSE – If you can’t air dry completely flip your hair upside down and gently diffuse.
- SCRUNCH OUT THE CRUNCH – At this point, your hair should be hard and crunchy. Bring back the 90’s! Flip your hair upside down and start scrunching, just like when you put your gel in. This will get rid of any crunch and add lots of volume!
