I am currently about ten weeks in to exclusively doing my hair curly. The summer is usually when I fully embrace my natural texture and let my curls free. Between the humidity and sweating from the heat, it just makes sense to go full curly. I really want to continue living the natural curl life, even after the summer. But that is going to take some work on my end!
Finding the right products and routine is key to curl success. It is trial and error and I swear I have spent hundreds of dollars over the years on products that just don’t work for my hair type.
I still haven’t found my perfect cocktail of hair products to give me the exact curls I want, but that could also be because I wish I had a different curly pattern. I have 2C/3A curls, and there are just some things you can’t change! I am also desperate for a hair cut. Who can relate?
Full disclosure, I am not on the strict “Curly Girl Method.” I just don’t think there should be so many rules and restrictions to making your curls work, so these products may or may not be CG approved.

CURLY HAIR FAVORITES
- CANTU WIDE TOOTH COMB: Any wide-tooth comb is going to do the job, but this one is $3.99 at Target, has a handle for your shower, and gently gets out all of my tangles.
- DENMAN BRUSH: Ok, this has been the biggest change-up in my routine that I think is really going to help get me the big, defined curls I really want. I have used it only three times now, but see a huge change in the way my curls clump together.
- AQUIS HAIR TURBAN: On days when I am air drying, I always plop my hair into this turban. It absorbs a lot of water and was specifically designed for curly hair types, which means less frizz than your standard towel turban. It is lightweight and easily fits around my larger than average head.
- SPRAY BOTTLE: I never knew my love for a spray bottle could run so deep, but this bad boy is ESSENTIAL in my curly routine. For refreshing, hydrating, and styling, I couldn’t get my curls right without this.
- BRIOGEO BE GENTLE, BE KIND AVOCADO AND KIWI HAIR MASK: I know that hydration is my number one issue with excess frizz. Because my hair is fine, I can’t use super rich and nourishing products. Usually… This mask is what I have been using as my daily conditioner on wash days and as my leave-in treatment. I just use a tiny amount when I get out of the shower to lock in moisture. It isn’t too heavy, and it smells like rainbow sherbet.
- MISS JESSIE’S CURLY MERINGUE: I have been really loving using this as my curl cream. It really helps to keep my curls clumped during drying and is really light. Just make sure you wash your hands off before applying your gel, otherwise, it sort of balls up!
- SHEA MOISTURE CURL AND STYLE MILK: Target for the win, yet again! This is an oldie but goodie for me. I have been using this when I have curls for years. It is light, hydrating, and gives my hair lots of shine. I use this OR the Curly Meringue.
- KRISTEN ESS CURL DEFINING JELLY: I have now gone through three bottles of this gel, and keep going back to it. It is super-strength hold, leaves a really nice cast on my hair, and doesn’t weigh my fine hair down. As of right now, it is my favorite versatile gel!
- BRIOGEO CURL CHARISMA FRIZZ CONTROL GEL: This is the good stuff right here. If you have thin, fine curly hair and really want to pump up the texture and the volume, this gel is for you. I don’t know what it is about it, but it just makes each strand of hair feel thicker. My hair gets really nice texture and volume when I use this gel, but the downside is that it ends up a little knotty due to the grip it seems to give my hair. If I really want my curls to pop, I use this. I just know I have to wash after two days, instead of three to avoid too many tangles.
If you have a similar hair pattern to me, I would LOVE any and ALL recommendations you have for controlling frizz, defining curls and keeping hair light and touchable. Pop them in the comments below or head over to my Instagram!
How do you protect your curls at night to sleep?
I plop them on top of my head in a hairband and wear a silk scarf!
Thank you for sharing your product recommendations and the other lady’s curly hair routines. I’m trying to help my 8 year old revive her curls. She’s got a lot of waves but not true curls and I’m not sure what products to use. Would you recommend these brands for kids?
Definitely! I really like the Shea moisture for kids and the Kinky Curly line at Target.
