One of the reasons I always get so excited for the weather to cool down is that fall fashion is just my absolute favorite. Especially after living through the heat of summer, all I want to do is layer all the things. My absolute favorite fall staple will always be the denim jacket.
It may seem to be a little overboard to have multiple denim jackets, but depending on the wash, fit and cut of the jacket, you can change up the whole vibe of your outfit. When it comes to casual fall outfits, the denim jacket will always be the queen.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF DENIM JACKETS
Not all denim jackets are created equal. I will share my absolute favorites later in the post, but lets talk about what you can look for when finding the perfect jacket for you and your style.
- OVERSIZED BOYFRIEND FIT – I love this style for more casual outfits, leggings, and sneakers. It can also work well with very feminine dresses to balance them out.
- CROPPED AND FITTED – This is the jacket I lean towards when wearing more loose and oversized clothing, as it helps to bring some shape back to the body and draw attention to the waist.
- CLASSIC CUT – This is going to hit you right at the top of your fit and be loose enough to wear a sweater or hoodie underneath without feeling boxy.
- COLORED DENIM JACKET – I LOVE a colored denim jacket to easily make the double denim look more attainable. A black, dusty mauve, olive, or khaki-colored denim jacket can easily become a closet staple. Choose a color that works with other items in your wardrobe.
- DISTRESSED OR EMBROIDERED JACKET – This can be the wild card in your jackets. Adding in some color, a fun patch, or distressing can add some interest to your jackets and make it more of a statement than your usual basic.

THE CLASSIC FIT
I have purchased all of these denim jackets over the last few years, and while I love them all, there is one that continues to be my favorite. And it is from Old Navy! It is a classic fit, medium wash, and is by far the most versatile denim jacket I have in my closet. It is almost always the one I reach for first, and it never steers me wrong. If you peek the outfit inspo above, it is the one I always grab!
I wear a 3X in this particular jacket and love the way it fits. Some fit notes are that it doesn’t button over my chest, which doesn’t bother me at all, as I never button my denim jackets. But if you want to be able to close it fully, you may want to consider sizing up one. It also has a decent amount of stretch and isn’t too stiff, making it super comfortable to wear.
THE BOYFRIEND FIT
I absolutely LOVE the Oversized Denim Jacket from Madewell. It is such gorgeous quality and has the best worn and weathered wash to it. Not too light, but not quite as blue as the Old Navy jacket above, it works really well with almost all outfits, and easily pairs with dark wash denim.
It is currently available in three different washes, all of which are beautiful. For the fit of this jacket. I would stay true to size, especially if you are plus size. You could even go up a size for a true oversized fit.
