I have been taking a basic prenatal for years and years. But beyond that, vitamins and supplements haven’t been very high on my list of priorities. I am so forgetful, and haven’t been able to really stick with it long enough to see or feel results. But with our recent fertility struggles, I have really upped my game.
My midwife gave me a pretty extensive list, with a few things to focus on to boost fertility and improve our chances of avoiding miscarriage.
First and foremost, I AM NOT A DOCTOR! I am not a medical professional, and have absolutely no advice to give on the subject of what works for others. Because I am clueless in this department. Be sure to contact your doctor, get some bloodwork done, and find out what is best for YOU and YOUR BODY.

A few tips…
Going from just a prenatal vitamin to taking nearly 20 pills a day is an adjustment. Get yourself a pill organizer and fill it up for the week. It helps keep you from forgetting or getting mixed up.
Go slow. When I first started, I had to split my pills up into four times a day, instead of two. Overloading can cause nausea, and I got it bad. But for two weeks, I split the pills I take in the morning up. It was a little annoying to have to remember to take pills four times a day, but it was worth it. Now, I can just pop everything when I wake up, and the rest before bed.
Supplements for Boosting Fertility
- Prenatal – You can take any prenatal that works for you, but my midwife recommend choosing one with FOLATE vs Folic Acid. I split my dose up between morning and night, since it is three capsules.
- DHA – I have been taking Nordic Naturals for a while, and like that their sustainably and responsibly source their fish oil. This one is combined with Ubiquinol/CoQ-10, another supplement that is meant to improve egg health!
- Probiotic – You want to make sure your probiotic has multiple strains of bacteria to get the most benefits.
- Vitamin D – Insufficient vitamin D has been linked to miscarriage, so this is an important one, as most Americans are deficient!
- Alpha Lipoic Acid – Supposed to help normalize ovarian function, reduce insulin resistance, and improve embryo quality.
- L-Arginine – Improves live birth rate and reduces chances of preeclampsia.
- CoQ10 – This is one of the supplements that was most stressed by my midwife. I take a combined pill with my DHA, as mentioned above. But CoQ10 is meant to boost mitochondria, which is one of the key factors in the decline in egg quality that happens with age.
- Vitamin C – I suffer from low progesterone, and vitamin c is meant to help with production.
- Melatonin – Again with the low progesterone, sleep quality aids in production of progesterone! I make sure this gets put in my evening spot to be taken right before bed.
- Vitamin E – Vitamin E is meant to increase cervical mucus, making it easier to actually get pregnant.
I know it is so overwhelming to be in the thick of infertility and not know where to start. But your OBGYN or midwife can be such a resource of information. Don’t wait! If you are concerned, get into your doctor asap. Information is power and it can only help!
If you split up the pills into am and pm are there any that should be taken together? Or it doesn’t really matter?
