These are some of my favorite posts to put together. I have always and forever been a bookworm, but for a while, I really struggled to make time for reading. It was a struggle to get too involved in a deep book, or I didn’t have the time to commit like I used to. But last year, I went back to my old ways, and started giving up sleep for books.
Ok, not completely. Alright, sometimes. But I started giving myself permission to just read. It didn’t always need to be some deep, intellectual, moving book. Reading is reading, and even if I had to read some trash once in a while to get into a groove, it was worth it.
During the summer, I don’t have the time, energy or capacity to read much beyond the light and fun romance/beach reads that fill the shelves. But come autumn, I have a little more free time and a little more mental energy to devote to my favorite hobby. So, this list is a little beefier than last season’s. It is a good mix of easy reads, thriller, romance, self help and deep.
I use this list as a general guide and make a goal to get through all of these (or more) by the end of the season. It is only about a book per week, maybe more. And that is where the lost sleep comes in!
Without further ado…
Fall Reading List 2019
- THE TESTAMENTS by MARGARET ATWOOD – The sequal to The Handmaid’s Tale FINALLY came out. I feel like this was a longer wait than Game of Thrones! But I’m excited to dive in. I will probably listen to this one on audio!
- TURN OF THE KEY by RUTH WARE -This book comes highly recommended by a ton of my favorite book lovers on IG. I’ve read a few of Ruth Ware’s suspense novels, and this is going to be one I devour on a cozy weekend. I have a feeling I will be staying up through all hours of the night to read this thriller about a nanny in the Scottish Highlands.
- AMERICAN ROYALS by KATHARINE MCGEE – This is the story of America if George Washington had become king instead of president. The description gives me some Gossip Girl vibes mixed with a historical dose of The Crown. I know I will love this one.
- ROOMIES by CHRISTINA LAUREN – I love The Unhoneymooers from last season’s book list, so looking forward to another fun romance from Christina Lauren. Set in NYC with plenty of time on the subway, I can get into it!
- THE CONSCIOUS CLOSET: THE REVOLUTIONARY GUIDE TO LOOKING GOOD WHILE DOING GOOG by ELIZABETH L CLINE – I’m not making any promises about going full on sustainable and what not. It just isn’t in my abilities at the moment. But I think we can make small changes in our daily habits, including how we shop and keep our home. I’m excited to give this a go!
- WE CAME HERE TO FORGET by ANDREA DUNLOP – This is a book I can’t really describe, I think because it has a very vague brief to not give any of the juicy bits away. It comes highly recommended and will be one of the first books I read!
- TALKING TO STRANGERS : WHAT WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TALKING TO THE PEOPLE WE DON’T KNOW by MALCOM GLADWELL – Another book I will listen to on audio. I find I enjoy self help books best when I hear them in the author’s own voice. I really need help in this department, as I am so shy around new people! Looking forward to learning a few tools to decrease my anxiety during public events.
- UGLY LOVE by COLLEEN HOOVER – I blame my love affair with Colleen on all of you. You started me down a rabbit hole I will happily live in! I love me a troubled love story, and am looking forward to a cold night and a hot cup of coco to get me through this book.
- PASSION ON PARK AVENUE by LAUREN LANE – I’m a sucker for a NYC romance novel, and I have heard wonderful things about this series. Each book details the life of woman in a tight knit group of friends. This is the first of three (currently out), and if I enjoy, I am sure I will immediately add the others to my list.
- AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE by TAYARI JONES – I have heard this one is a tear jerker, so have the tissues at the ready if you get into this. Crime, young love, and a triangle that mixes things up are all signs of a good book in my opinion.
- HOW COULD SHE by LAUREN MECHLING – A post break up woman who moves to NYC to follow her friends? Yes, please! I think this is meant to really focus on the power and struggle of female friendships, all surrounded by the harsh reality of living in New York City. High on my list to read!
- A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW by AMOR TOWELS – This has been on the New York Times Bestseller list for weeks in a row and is coming out as a TV show soon. I am a person who HAS to read the book before watching the show or movie, so a must for this season’s reading list.
I hope this list gives you a jumping off point to take things a little bit slower this fall, read for pleasure a little bit more, and spend some time with just yourself.
