I am a black sheep in the beauty world. I have never really gotten the hype of a primer. It is always something I can take or leave. I think the only bottle of primer I have finished is the Becca Backlight Primer and maybe a bottle of the Benefit Porefessional. But I just can’t think that I should keep looking for my personal holy grail primer, because everyone says it is ESSENTIAL. So, I continue buying them to test!
The Tatcha Liquid Silk Canvas has been ALL over the internet the last few weeks. I can’t see a makeup tutorial without someone slapping it on their face, and I had serious FOMO and needed to give it a go. It isn’t pricey, so I waited until the Sephora Sale when I could justify the high price tag for a primer.

This is a primer with a few additional skincare like benefits. It claims that with extended use, you can see a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, and it is meant to help protect against pollution and free radicals in the air that may contribute to early aging.
I have tried the original Silk Canvas that comes in a little pot and I absolutely hated it. It was messy and made my skin feel super oily. But I still had to try this bad boy out.
WHAT I THINK ABOUT
TATCHA LIQUID SILK CANVAS PRIMER
Liquid Silk Canvas is not meant to be a primer for keeping your makeup on for hours and hours. It is really to help even out the skin texture, reduce the appearance of pores, and create a smooth, even surface for a flawless makeup application. It has the clean certification from Sephora and is cruelty-free.
While this is a pricey primer, you only need one pump of product for your entire face. It smooths over the skin like butter and dries to a very matter feeling. It isn’t tacky or sticky, which I really like! It doesn’t have silicone, but does have a bit of a slippery feel to it.
I LOVE the way my makeup looks after applying Liquid Silk Canvas. All of the claims of smooth, poreless skin are 100% accurate. I have lots of texture and uneven skin tone, but when I use this primer it looks as if I have beautiful skin.
I wanted to give this a solid try and test it with all of my favorite foundations. I have quite a few! The foundations it works best with are more high coverage. But it helped so much with reducing any cakey foundation look when working with full coverage makeup.
I didn’t love the way my foundation applied on top of this when using more liquid or sheer foundations.
You obviously can’t say much about how the primer looks, but you can say a whole lot about how foundation lays on top of it. I found that using a beauty blender worked much better than a foundation brush and I didn’t need to set my makeup with as much powder when using the Liquid Silk Canvas.
This isn’t a primer that I can get extended wear from my foundation, though. This is my one and only caveat. My skin looks FLAWLESS for the first maybe five hours? But then I start to have a lot of oil and makeup break up around my nose, something that doesn’t happen when not wearing Liquid Silk. I can usually pat it in and reset my T-zone area, but if I could get eight solid hours from this primer I would be sold forever.
NO EDITING ON EITHER PHOTO. NATURAL LIGHT
IS IT WORTH IT?
For a whopping total of $52, I am going to give this primer a 4/5 stars. If you can snag it on sale, even at 10% off, I totally think it is worth every penny. My skin has never looked so good under full coverage foundation and it would be the perfect primer for date nights, events, a wedding, and the like. Or if you are like me and don’t really mind spending too much money on your makeup stash, this is a solid primer!
I decided to knock it down from the full five stars for the price tag and the longevity. Head to my IG stories to see it in action with a few of my current makeup favorites.
