Over the years I have slowly switched out a few of my every day products to more natural products. I will never be that person who is completely au natural, but if there is an easy switch that works well, I will take it. I won’t go on and on about the reasons to switch, mainly because there is a reason google was invented. I’m here to talk about how to help you get rid of the horrible smell that can come after switching from a traditional antiperspirant to a natural deodorant.

A few weeks ago, I finally swapped to a natural deodorant. There were immediately problems. I have never been a stinky person. Sure, I use deodorant, but if I didn’t put it on, it was no big deal unless I was working out. As soon as I started using the natural stuff, the body odor came out in full force. I mean, wtf?! It was so bad. After doing a little research, I found out you apparently need to detox your pits. Yep, masking your armpits is a real thing. Who knew!
The aluminum and other “baddies” in the traditional stuff is meant to stop you from sweating and stinking. Sounds great, right? Except it blocks your sweat glands and creates all of this buildup. This is where a little detox comes in! Let’s get to it!
Armpit Detox
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of Bentonite Clay
- 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of water
- coconut oil (optional)
In a small bowl, mix together the clay, apple cider vinegar and water to form a paste. Try to use a plastic or wooden spoon, because metal can change some of the clay properties!
Slather it all over your pits. You are gonna look hot.
You only want to keep this on your armpits for about 5-10 minutes. Jump in the shower after and rinse it off with warm water.
The apple cider vinegar can irritate your skin, so if it starts to sting or feel uncomfortable, take it right off. You skin will be a little pink, but any redness will go away in a few minutes.
Once you have cleaned and dried your armpits, you can apply some coconut oil to rehydrate your skin.
Repeat this over a course of five days. While you are doing the detox, don’t put on any deodorant, natural or otherwise. You should immediately see a massive improvement just on day one. But doing this a few times will really make sure you are totally detoxed. Since I did this, I am totally smell free. Thank god!
I’m not going to lie. If I had known that I would have to deal with stinking issues, but I am glad that I stuck it out! I went through a few different brands while I was trying to figure out what was going on with the B.O. situation and there are two that I totally love.
Native Deodorant
This is my current go to. I freaking love this stuff! I have the Lavender Rose scent, and it is heavenly. It has just a bit of a spa scent that makes using it feel extra luxe. The Native deodorants smooth on nicely, and I still smell fresh at the end of the day.
LaVanilla Healthy Deodorant in Lavender Vanilla
This deodorant was the first that I bought. I had hear rave reviews and you can buy it at Sephora. Of course, I was going to try it. All of the scents are incredible, but there is something special about this Lavender Vanilla scent. It isn’t overwhelming, but you know you are covered in the stench department. If you are looking for just a bit more of a splurge, you can’t go wrong with this stuff.
Do you use natural deodorant? If you are going to make the switch, definitely do this detox to avoid any embarrassment like me!
I have been thinking about making the switch here in Maine we have a company called Tom’s of Maine and they make all natural products. Nice to know about the detox being needed though. I won’t lie when you said: “You are gonna look hot.” I almost died laughing. That’s great LOL.
bahaha. My husband walked in and was like…. “Is this what you are doing now? Masking your pits?” Hey, man. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do! <#
I recently started using natural deodorant. I love it an so great o the skin. I bought mine but I’m gonna try this recipe for the detox!
I almost went back to regular. But once I did this, I am in love!
Simple and all natural. I love this and I have all of these ingredients in my cupboard as well . Will be giving this a try . May just add some sugar and turn it into a body scrub 🙂
Oh, good thinking!!!
I love the idea of the arm pit detox. I have to definitely try this out.
I mean, we all have pits. 🙂 And sometimes they are stinky! haha.
I may have to consider trying a natural deodorant. A lot of deodorants irritate my underarms, and I can only use classic dove, otherwise, I itch like crazy.
Yes! That happened to me all the time. Especially after shaving my under arms. But I haven’t had any irritation since doing the detox and switching.
i have never heard of an armpit detox but then why not? i use deo daily so it means that it expose to chemical everyday! i sirely want to try this now!
We put masks on our face, why not other areas? 😀
I love this post! I just did a post on my blog about the importance of making the switch to a natural deodorant, & talked about the unfortunate smells you may experience lol! I know I did! I like your idea about adding the coconut oil after the mask…very smart! I use Schmidt’s natural deodorant and I think it works wonderful!
I tried Schmidt’s. The lime scent is so good!!
