Anyone else suffer from perpetually dry skin? It has been a constant struggle all my life, and I still struggle to stay on top of it. I love splurging on a super luxe body scrub or exfoliator, but sometimes you just need to slough off the dead skin ASAP. I recently tried a self tanner for the first time and I have been vigilant since application about exfoliating and moisturizing. I busted out this super easy at home sugar scrub, and it puts some of my favorite brand’s body scrubs to shame.
One benefit of making your own scrub is that you know exactly what you are putting into it. I always worry with certain exfoliants about those tiny little plastic beads or that they are filled with harsh chemicals. But once I had researched some at home sugar scrub recipes, I saw that I had almost all of the ingredients! Allergies? Totally not a problem. You can swap out for other easy items. Most of these bits are hanging out in your pantry.
If you don’t feel like you can squeeze one more beauty product into your budget, this recipe is for you. I wanted something simple, safe and that also smelled delicious! I didn’t want to add in essential oils (although you totally could!) I like to err on the side of caution when using oils around my little one. Better to be safe then sorry! Lots of conflicting info and there are other great ways to infuse some lovely scents! The oil leaves your skin feeling super hydrated and the sugar makes it soft as a baby’s bottom.
Making a big batch of scrubs and putting into little mason jars is a great way to store up on some last minute gifts for teachers, visitors, hosts or when you just totally forget that you have a birthday on the calendar! Tie them up with a sweet ribbon and a homemade card, and you have the perfect present for any beauty obsessed friend.
Ok, one last thing before we get into this five minute recipe! When you are making an at home sugar scrub, don’t be afraid to experiment. If you have a favorite oil, like jojoba, switch out the coconut oil for that! If you love a floral scent, add in some dried lavender or rose instead of the lemon zest and vanilla. The world is your oyster in this arena! You can easily double this recipe if you are making gifts. It keeps just fine at room temperature in your bathroom for a few months! I doubt it will last that long!
Lemon Cupcake Sugar Scrub
1 cup granutated sugar (I love using turbinado sugar for extra scrub!)
1 cup coconut sugar – brown sugar would be great, too!
1 cup coconut oil, just melted (easily swap out for olive, almond, jojoba… Choose something you love!)
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 teaspoons fresh lemon zest.
Mix everything together and store in a mason jar or other glass, airtight container. Before turning the shower on, give your whole body a good scrub down. Rinse off while you shower and feel buttery soft after! Use this before you shave, self tan, or whenever you are feeling a bit like a crocodile.
Do you use a body scrub? Have you self tanned? Leave me all your tips below!

I’ve never made my own sugar scrub before – but I’m intrigued. I have to admit the name just sounded so delicious and drew me in. My skin gets really oily though, would this scrub still be applicable for me?

I am so excited to try this! I adore sugar scrubs but they are always so expensive and I use up one jar in like 2 weeks! This is perfect!

I actually do use a body scrub because I tend to have some rough and bumpy skin on the side of my thighs and the backs of my arms. I also use a scrub after shaving to get rid of the extra dead skin left behind from the razor.
I’ll have to try this out! x
