Heading back to school in a few weeks, I am feeling all sorts of feels. Grateful, sad, excited, and just a touch overwhelmed. We have had a very chill summer, without bedtimes or schedules and it has been amazing. But that is all about to change!
Thankfully, we are getting ready for the new school year with Walmart. The last thing I want to spend my final days of summer doing is running around the city, scrambling to get everything we need to be organized. Walmart has fast and easy two day shipping($35 minimum order), making it super convenient to get prepped and ready!
Marcus is heading into kindergarten, and I can’t even believe it. He is also switching schools and bringing a packed lunch four days a week. I haven’t ever had to make lunches for school before, but it is daunting! Not because I can’t throw together a sandwich, but because who wants to eat the same thing every day? Not me!
I want to mix is up for Marcus and make sure that he is getting something delicious, nutritious and a little bit exciting each day. The school day is long and he will need to stay energized and ready to learn!
Snack plates have been a big deal in our house for lunch this summer. For whatever reason, he thinks it is way more exciting that just “lunch,” and is much more willing to try new things and eat a few veggies when I tell him it is a snack. Whatever works, right?
I’m taking that idea and applying it to school lunches! I don’t want to add to the stress of the morning, so I am creating a running list of things I can make at night before bed and have still be tasty when lunch time rolls around. It is trickier than you might think, and I can tell I will need to get creative as the year goes on.
Walmart has a huge selection of back to school items, including lunch bags, bento boxes, and a ton of pantry items you can have delivered with their two day express shipping! I found some really great items that will definitely make packing lunches easier!
I want to have Marcus help me help him, as that is the best way to foster independence. So, I am going to have him make his lunches with me in the evenings. Who knows! Maybe by next year he will be doing it all himself. But I won’t know if I don’t put the work in now.
We are trying to reduce the amount of waste we create in our house, and so buying a few reusable zip top bags was essential! I found this adorable set on Walmart.com with these cute monster faces on them. Marcus thinks are SO fun.
We also didn’t have any plastic containers, so I found these easy open air tight containers to use. The rectangle shape makes it easy to pack into a lunch box and mix and matching. They are BPA free and easy for Marcus to open and close. Walmart offers a wide variety of options, but I really like that these are both dishwasher safe and leak proof!
I picked up a thermos to do leftovers in from time to time. It will be easy to fill with some warm pasta or soup in the morning and have it be the perfect temp at lunch! This particular thermos is meant to keep things hot (or cold) for up to 24 hours!
Marcus picked out this awesome Spiderman lunchbox while browsing Walmart’s selection. that was such a great price. I have a feeling we will end up with a lost box or forgotten over the weekend, and I didn’t want to spend a fortune. Walmart has a huge selection of character bags for school at amazing prices.
