The month of July in the Gutierrez household was a little bit… full on to say the least. We had a ton of wedding. A getaway to Pennsylvania with some family, and work. So. Much. Work. After all of that, we were in serious need of actual R&R, so we escaped the blazing summer heat of Manhattan to Buttermilk Falls Inn and Spa.
Nestled just off the Hudson River in Milton, NY, Buttermilk Falls Inn is a quaint little “village.” When you arrive, it honestly feels as if you are being transported into a fairy tale. There is a main house, where breakfast and afternoon tea are held, Henry’s restaurant, a few private cottages and a full, organic farm – complete with chickens, goats and a few donkeys!
We had planned the little getaway to just be the two of us. But life happens and Marcus ended up tagging along! When Mr G and I parked the car, we just turned to each other with mouths agape. After not having a proper holiday just the two of us since having Marcus four years ago, this felt extra special (even with our little dude and French bulldog passed out in the back seat).
The weather was drizzly and perfect for cozying up in our cottage. We stayed in Pony’s Pad, an absolutely gorgeous two story cottage overlooking with an incredible view of the Hudson. A fully equipped kitchen, patio with a barbecue, romantic walk in shower and California king sized bed gave us a private little hideaway all to ourselves.
Buttermilk Falls Inn has it’s own eco friendly spa right on site. The mid century modern vibes were right in line with everything I love, in terms of decor. The heated pool, steam room and sauna are all included in your stay – and I took full advantage! Their menu of spa services use all natural products, some with ingredients sourced straight from their farm!
After the rain finally stopped, we wondered over to Henry’s, the on property restaurant, for a few cocktails and dinner. I had heard rave reviews about the farm to table experience at Buttermilk Falls. They source their menu straight from their organic farm. From the eggs in the ice cream all the way to the cucumbers in our salad.
We started with a few cocktails (highly recommend the Beach Plum Fizz!). and the fresh made bread and herbed butter. The calamari was some of the best I have ever had, and the Millstone Farm Summer Salad was beyond. Big chunks of feta, sweet, vine ripened heirloom tomatoes, salty olives, and the sweetest balsamic was probably the highlight of my meal. So bright and fresh. Everything you want in summer from a farm to table dining experience. We share the totally over the top and completely delicious tomahawk steak. Cooked to perfection!
We took Sheldon for a late night stroll before getting into bed. Let me just say, I had one of the best sleeps I have had in ages. I’m super picky about mattresses, and the four of us slept until 8:00. That’s a record in our house! It was so nice to pad downstairs, brew a cup of coffee and sit on the porch, listening to the birds chirp. Hearing the simple sounds of nature is one of those thing we take for granted living in the city.
Breakfast at Buttermilk Falls Inn was perfection. There is a small breakfast buffet, with fruit, yogurt, incredible homemade pastries, and fresh, organic juices. Each day, the menu changes, with three breakfast choices cooked to order. When you spend most days drinking coffee while running out the door, sitting down to a special, warm breakfast is the best way to start the day.
We spent the morning wandering the grounds. There are some great little trails around the property, perfect for hiking and exploring. We checked out the farm and sat on the pond, feeding the geese. After another cup of coffee, it was time to pack our bags for reality.
Getting There
The drive to Buttermilk Falls Inn from Manhattan is just under an hour and a half (maybe less without summer traffic!). But the best part for us, and most New Yorkers without a car, is the Inn is just a Metro North ride away. You can jump on the train at Grand Central and take the train straight to Poughkeepsie. It is just a quick cab ride from the station.
What to Expect
Check in is at three, but you can arrive any time during the day to explore the grounds and take advantage of the spa – do not miss out on this. Afternoon tea is served in the main house with house made treats and baked goods.
Buttermilk Falls Inn and Spa is totally pet friendly. You can spend time with your pup while hiking on the Rail Trail or just stay huddled up in your cute cottage watching tv.
While the summertime in Milton is exquisite, I cannot imagine how stunning this entire place must be when the leaves have turned, and there is that crisp chill in the air. Our cute little cottage even had a working fireplace! We are already planning a weekend in October to sneak away for our anniversary.
