I’m about to change your life with this post. Alright, that was totally dramatic. But taking one piece in your wardrobe and styling it multiple ways is the key to a plus size capsule wardrobe. I always here the biggest issue with a capsule wardrobe is that it is boring. Totally wrong! You can totally have bold, fun prints and patterns in your capsule. I’ve starting playing around with a few pieces, and styling one maxi dress three ways has been a game changer.

Do you ever fall in love with some fabulous, bold top or dress, wear it a few times and then have to retire it? Or worry that you can’t work it into your basics wardrobe for regular wear? Sometimes, I feel like the bolder the outfit, the less I can wear it! It is so silly, but being an outfit repeater, especially in the world of blogging and fashion, is practically a sin. But I am a lover of simplicity and despite being plus size, I want my clothing to reflect my true style. Fun. Bright. With just a hint of black. My dream capsule!
When I found “my dress”, I wore it a few times and then didn’t know what to do with it. It was a bold print, had two slits, and buttoned down the front. It was casual but still sexy. Appropriate for mom life, but still made me feel like a queen. There was no way I was giving it up, but I needed to learn how to STYLE it. Keep it fresh! Having a piece like this in your capsule wardrobe can seem a little out of place when all you are given on Pinterest are chambray button downs and white jeans.
I’ve mastered wearing one maxi dress three ways out of pure desperation to wear this dress more often. That is how much I love it!
A Few Things I Look for in a Maxi Dress
- V-Neckline – When you are wearing a long dress, having a v-neck creates an elongated silhouette.
- Functioning Buttons – Gives you so many options when changing up your style.
- Defined Waist – A maxi dress can look a little frumpy on me, so I like to pick one that is a bit more fitted than a mumu.
One Maxi Dress Three Ways
Style Option One
Obviously, you can just rock your maxi dress just like it comes. Add in a belt for some fun detail and you are good to walk out the door. I love to pair a maxi with super minimal shoes, that almost blend in to my foot to keep that relaxed, bohemian vibe going.
Style Option Two
Ok, I am totally obsessed with this. Wearing your maxi dress as a duster is the perfect way to transition your maxis into the cooler months as the summer fades. This is wear those functioning buttons come in! Pairing it with simple tank and shorts create a kimono like look. Light, airy, and perfect for the days when it is too hot to function.
Style Option Three
It is so easy to turn your maxi into a shirt by tying it up. You can use those buttons again for leaving it open with a tank underneath, too. It also looks adorable to knot the bottom of the maxi. You can pretty much tie it up in any way to create a different shape.
Just remember to keep things interesting
Layer Layer Layer
It seems counter intuitive to add on layers when you are dressing in the summer. On those days where it isn’t blistering hot and humid, take advantage! Add in a cute denim jacket. Or tie up a white linen button down shirt to add some variety to your dress.
Accessories are your best friend
Dress up a casual summer dress with some platform heels. Take that chiffon, thigh high slit dress that is your go to for hot nights and wear a pair of white Converse to dress it down. Accessories are the easiest place to experiment because they don’t take up too much space in your closet, they are usually way less expensive than clothing items and a bright colors purse is an easy way to dip your toe into a new style. One day I may try a belt bag!
Don’t Forget…
When looking for your perfect maxi, make sure to look for these key things.
- V-Neckline
- Functioning Buttons
- Defined Waist
Don’t get wrapped up in the “more, more, more” mentality. You can be a fashion diva AND STILL rock a plus size capsule wardrobe. Especially when you learn how to become the world’s best outfit repeater!
